List of gear Deb used on Get Free
Get Free was produced by Debra, Wayne Dorell, Jerry Ramos and Anthony Krizan. The band put down bass, drums and guitar for 11 songs at Dorell's Pigeon Club studio, including the impromptu jam version of "The Needle and the Damage Done." Next, Deb and Ramos recorded guitars at SST Studios in Weehawken. "It was like being a kid in a candy store, only the candy was amplifiers!" says Deb, who used everything from a Vox AC30 to a Mesa Boogie Rectifier. An evening visit from Wynne Paris and Perry Robinson led to Perry playing clarinet on "Love That Lasts" and Wynne contributing sarod (Indian lute) to "Howl at the Moon."
Deb began weekly treks to Krizan's Sonic Boom studio in Raritan NJ to work on vocals and harmonies, with Krizen singing on "Runaway" and "When It Comes Down" and adding the guitar hook to "All That I Need." Another Jersey rocker, Wiser Time's Carmen Scalfani, dropped in to sing on "Howl at the Moon."
Meanwhile, in LA, Michael W. Dean, ex-singer for Bomb (one of Deb's favorite bands from the '90s), added the T. Rex-ish backing vocal for "Demon In The Sack," with Dollie Llama contributing some sexy sounds. Deb returned to the Pigeon Club to record Rob Clores playing keys. She finished vocals and mixed the album with Dorell--with a giant pile of reference CDs ranging from Blondie to Wolfmother. Get Free was mastered by Fred Kevorkian using analog and digital gear.
Get Free is released by the band's True Nature Records under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license--except for "Runaway" and "The Needle and the Damage Done," which are all rights reserved. The plastic-free package opens like an old-school LP and holds an 8-page booklet with lyrics, credits, and photos. Printed on the CD is the Sanskrit prayer lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu: May all beings everywhere be happy and free. "Get Free is about the longing for love and the longing for God, and the crazy things we pursue-from sex to drugs to relationships-to try to appease those longings," says Debra, a long-time yoga practitioner. "All our efforts to escape from being human help us evolve," she adds, laughing, "whether we like it or not!" The album is digitally distributed by Redeye USA.
