Debra Devi at Tachair Books

[caption id="attachment_3417" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="photo by Beth Bentley"][/caption]Downtown Jersey City is the most communal place I've lived since I left NYC's East Village years ago. And two of the most supportive, loveliest people in town are the mother-and-daughter owners of Tachair Bookshoppe, Carol and Aleta Valleau. I recently did a concert/reading there for The Language of the Blues and the vibe was so warm and welcoming. So were the free coffee and delicious chocolate cookies. Thanks to everyone who came and asked fascinating questions, too! Please continue to support this independent, family-owned Jersey City gem. Read all about Aleta and Carol in the JCI article Tachair Books Hoping for More Live Performances.
Why Are The Blues Called “The Blues”?

Why Are The Blues Called “The Blues”?

Why are the blues called "the blues" anyway? This is just one of the questions I had that compelled me to write The Language of the Blues: From Alcorub to Zuzu. Want to find out? Read my latest for The Huffington Post. "Why is blues music called "the blues"? The name of this great American music probably originated with the 17th-century English expression "the blue devils," for the intense visual hallucinations that can accompany severe alcohol withdrawal. Shortened over time to "the blues," it came to mean a state of agitation or depression. "Blue" was slang for "drunk" by the 1800s. The link between "blue" and drinking is also indicated by "blue laws" that still prohibit Sunday alcohol sales in some states..." click here to read the rest!

Just. Be. Love.

I had the most beautiful dream last night. I was desperately searching for a lost dog along a beach when a cardinal began flying alongside me. At first I ignored it but then I realized I was ignoring a miracle. I stopped and turned and the bird also stopped in mid-air and turned to face me, hovering. I held up my palms as if to bless it and incredible love and joy in the form of energy came pouring out of the center of my palms toward the bird. I could see every detail in his tiny face as I stood there and he floated in the air. His black eyes, his yellow beak, the crimson feathers laying against his head. Don't worry about the dog, the dog is fine, stop chasing whatever runs from you. Stand still, open your heart and just. be. love.
