Deb Talks (A Lot) with Guitar International

by debra on Feb.13, 2010, under Uncategorized

deb-and-amps-SSTeditI went on a date a few years ago with a very cute guitarist for a cool Brooklyn band…French restaurant, candlelight, delicious wine…and all we talked about was how to wire volume knobs and install jumbo frets. We were doomed as a couple but united as guitar geeks forevah!

It’s rare that I get the opportunity to guitar geek out…talk about amps and pickups and string gauges. Here’s my interview with Guitar International, the ultimate website for guitar geeks and the people who put up with them. Our six-minute jam cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” is the splash track over at GI this month, check it out!

Devi Featured Artist on Songshooter.com

by debra on Feb.10, 2010, under Uncategorized

We’re the featured artist this month on Songshooter.com. They asked me to write about five Devi songs. This was tougher than I thought it would be! The stories behind my songs are pretty personal so it was hard to decide how much to say. Like, do I admit that I tried heroin? Once?

It’s Hornlike.

by debra on Feb.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

Somebody ran the Devi JamBase review through a cracked online translator for ICT Magazine: A Global News Portal.

“It’s hornlike to conceive of added adornment quite same sway noesis triad Devi, who combining the intelligence and intricacy of a beatific wad adornment with the catchiness of oldness noesis pop,the cognisance and connexion of stripling and the irregular smirking metal flourish. Beefed up with percussionist Pat Catino nonnegative keyboard wizard Rob Clores, Devi excited and seduced the conference with playfully executed improvisations that threatened to verify their melodic rockers into uncharted territory. When they eventually did, the results were rattling satisfying.”

You know you want to read the rest! We’re going to make this the band’s new bio.

Devi on JamBase

by debra on Feb.02, 2010, under Uncategorized

Devi-Sullivan Hall NYC, 01.06.09, photo Sirena MercadoWe got a really nice review today on JamBase of our recent gig at Sullivan Hall in NYC. Woo! That was an extra special show because both Rob Clores (keys) and Pat Catino (percussion) were able to join us. For the first time I was onstage thinking “wow, this really sounds like the album!” Which was pretty groovy.

Guitar Nerds Challenge – “Love That Lasts”

by debra on Feb.02, 2010, under Uncategorized

jimmy page photoCheck out Perry Robinson’s clarinet intro and John Hummel’s incredible drumming around 2:20 on our song “Love That Lasts.” John’s gotta be the bastard musical lovechild of Ginger Baker and John Bonham.

OK Guitar Nerds – what tuning am I using on this song? I’ll give you a hint, it’s a favorite of Jimmy Page. This photo of him makes me want to lick his neck.

‘Fighting It’ Trailer or I Love My Friends – Part 2

by debra on Dec.15, 2009, under Uncategorized

OK I already bragged about the P Posse in a previous post but it’s time to do it again and show ya Jill Morley’s trailer for her killer upcoming docu film, Fighting It.

Me, John and Keith are extra psyched ’cause our song “All That I Need” is in the film. We just shot a music video with Jill and Evan Seplow last weekend at Keith’s rockin new Jersey City bar Boca Grande!. Life is good.

To make a tax-deductible contribution to help Jill finish the film, go HERE. She’s almost done, just needs some $ to re-mix the sound and edit.

Crusher interview – Devi

by debra on Nov.10, 2009, under Music, Press, Uncategorized

Let’s hear it for those tireless rock fanatics who pour their hearts and souls into letting the world know about new music…and manage to be politically conscious in the process. Christine Natanael, ediatrix-in-chief of Crusher magazine is one of ‘em. Christine and I met awhile back when she took me to see Ministry at Irving Plaza last fall. Our NYC homeboy Tommy Victor from Prong was shredding it on guitar. I danced my face off.

For my interview with Crusher, Christine chose Crusher’s London writer Alissa Ordabai, because Alissa’s also a guitar player and gets all that guitar geek stuff. We got deep into it about female guitarists, the metaphysics of the blues, Camille Paglia and, oh yeah, the Get Free album.

Jo Boobs Takes It Off – to Devi!

by debra on Nov.01, 2009, under Uncategorized

Get out your sparkly pasties!  Jo “Boobs” Weldon is stripping to Devi songs “Take It Off” and “All That I Need” in her hot new DVD Striptease for Burlesque, Exotic Dance and Every Day. Here’s a peek!

Jo is the headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque and one of my best gal pals. Supportive girlfriends are so important to us hardworking creative types! Jo, me, Jill Morley and Lily Burana formed a little posse (the P Posse; you’ll have to guess what the “P” stands for!) a few years ago. We get together for dinner and root each other on in our various creative pursuits. It’s been so exciting to see them materialize! Jill’s films (Stripped and her upcoming doc on female boxers Fighting It), Lily’s books (Strip City, TRY, I Love a Man in Uniform), my band and our new album, Jo’s school and now her DVDs and her upcoming book The Burlesque Handbook. Woo, go PP!

Yogis Get “Spiritually Active” at the World Peace Yoga Conference

by debra on Oct.12, 2009, under Uncategorized

Not only do I play a mean guitar, I like to stand on my head. I know, I’m weird. My yoga teachers and dear friends, Sharon Gannon and David Life, are key speakers at the World Peace Yoga Conference Oct 23-25. This is first all-vegan and openly “political” yoga conference! I’m so proud of Sharon and David–if they were Marshall stacks, they’d be 10 feet tall.  Read my blog about the Conference this week for HeadCount.org.
